In some states, you can avoid the purchase of liability coverage if you can verify that you have the personal financial resources to cover the minimum requirements required by the state in which you live. The liability insurance covers you when you're driving any vehicle on your property, or if you are driving the car of another person with your permission.

It does not cover your own injuries, or those of any other driver included in your insurance policy. This coverage usually pays: Medical expenses; physical therapy or rehabilitation; the lost work time due to an injury; the legal representation of the other party; funeral expenses; and, possibly, "pain and suffering", which is determined by a court in case of suffering emotional or physical stress resulting from the accident.
