Traveling in the United States can be both a fascinating and rewarding experience. Unfortunately, the US is not an inexpensive country to live or travel. However, with the proper knowledge and some cunning to travel, you can make your journey through this country with a low budget
Avoid the tourist traps!
Many places in the United States have business dependent on tourism. To these we call them "tourist traps" Tourist traps) because they usually sell lower quality merchandise at inflated prices. In any tourist attraction you will find gift shops, street vendors and restaurants in the surrounding area. Avoid these establishments! As a general rule, it is best to avoid places that enrich themselves at the expense of its visitors. These include the restaurants and shops in most airports. When you visit a tourist destination, plan to buy your food and souvenirs a bit further away from the attraction.
Make your tours with flights
The most common means of traveling long distances in the United States is the air. If you want to travel cheap, most airlines offer low "standby". When the airline does not sell all seats on a flight, those that remain are sold to passengers waiting in "standby" at very reduced prices. Fly in this way can make traveling for less than half the normal rate, but is not guaranteed the seat. You may have to wait hours before a seat is available. Normally it is not allowed to carry baggage in the cabin, so pack as little as possible. However, this may not be the most economical alternative when you consider that cross-country bus travel takes several days and that you must spend a lot on lodging and food. The Grayhound Bus Company offers unlimited-travel passes in seven to 60 days. There are special fares for students and international travelers. Before traveling should consider cuidadosamene the pros and cons between traveling by plane or bus. Airplanes are much faster, but the bus lets you see the country as you travel.
Train travel is very limited in the United States
One thing is for sure, rail travel in America is expensive, unreliable and inconvenient. You should not consider it as a primary travel option in this country. However, if you plan a lot of travel between major cities, trains can be an economical means to do so. Amtrak, the only line of passenger rail transport in the United States, offers a thirty day pass for unlimited rail travel in any part of the country. Depending on the season, USA Rail passes costs between three hundred and five hundred fifty dollars. This may seem expensive, but if you plan to travel quite a lot in a short period of time, in the long run it is cheaper than buying several plane tickets or bus. Remember that trains tend to travel only between the big cities!
Do not hitchhike!
Hitchhiking can be dangerous, and it is illegal in most states. I do not want to go on a vacation and end up in jail.
Inexpensive lodging can be a challenge
Finding an inexpensive place to stay can be a challenge, however here are some economical alternatives to a cheap motel or to overstuffing a hotel room.
If you are traveling through the more rural parts of the country, almost all of the larger state and national parks have campsites which can be rented for extremely low rates, sometimes as low as 5 dollars a night. Usually this includes a pariila couple cooking, space for tents, a common bathroom and shower area. The private spaces for camping have a higher cost but usually include some additional amenities such as hot water, swimming pool, laundry and grocery store. Many large universities rent some of their rooms during the summer. In most large cities there is at least a college that participates in this program. Typically you can rent a room and a shower for a modest fee. Unfortunately, most universities only have space during the summer, between the end of June and early September. You can call the office of lodging in the university you are interested to obtain information about this type of accommodation.
In all the big cities you can find facilities of the YMCA and YWCA that offer accommodation. As soon as prices include showers, space to sleep and sometimes a hot food. The YMCA and YWCA are a bit more expensive than other forms of low-cost housing, but they are also more reliable and more comfortable.
